This rating scale is provided as a complement to Audiobook Reviews.

Five Stars *****

The narration actually makes the book better. The listener may seek out additional books recorded by the narrator solely due to the quality of the work. Earning this rating is very rare. To date, only Sissy Spacek (To Kill a Mockingbird; Loretta Lynn: Coal Miner’s Daughter) has earned a five star rating.

Four Stars ****

The voice is pleasant and does not detract from the content of the book. The listener is able to forget the voice and become fully immersed in the story. Most narration will earn four stars.

Three Stars ***

While the voice is not necessarily unpleasant, the listener is constantly aware of it. The narration may be too monotone or fail to add the needed inflections to demonstrate the proper emotions, e.g. surprise, anger, fear, etc.

Two Stars **

The narration is poor. The listener may attempt to manipulate the narration, e.g. increase or reduce the speed, treble, or bass to make the narration minimally acceptable for listening.

One Star *

The narration makes listening enjoyment impossible. Earning this rating is very rare. To date, only one narrator has received this rating. Out of kindness, she will remain unnamed.
